Scotland made a positive start to the game when Anya had a deflected shot hit the post after 4 minutes. A few minutes later McGregor had to make a save from Uchebo. With 10 minutes on the clock, a shot from outside the box by Morrison was flicked by Charlie Mulgrew's heel to loop over the keeper and into the net to give Scotland an early lead. After half an hour, Scotland had the ball in the net again, when Grant Hanley headed a Maloney corner into the net.  The referee harshly judged Hanley to have fould the keeper though and ruled out the goal. Five minutes before the break, Nigeria equalised when a shot from outside the box by Uchebo took a deflection off Hanley to steer it past McGregor.  Just into the second half, McGregor had to pull off a save from close range when Ameobi had a close shot. Scotland restored their lead after 52 minutes when a low cross from Hutton was knocked into his own goal from Egwuekwe.  15 minutes later substitute Chris Martin almost increased Scotland's lead when he had a close range shot palmed past the post by the keeper.  In the final minute, some poor defending by Scotland left some space for Nwofor to hit a low shot past McGregor into the opposite corner. Scotland had to settle for a draw, which had they won, it would have been the first Scotland team since 1951 to win 4 consecutive away matches.
