Scotland made a bright start to the match. It was only three minutes on the clock when Anya made a run down the wing and he cut back to Steven Fletcher who forced a save out of the Irish keeper McGovern. Five minutes later, a shot by Anya was also saved by McGovern. After quarter of an hour, Anya had another shot at goal, but this was wide of the post. The same happened five minutes later, as Scotland were piling on the pressure. After half an hour, Maloney played a great ball through to Steven Flether, but his shot was saved by the outrushing McGovern. In the second half, Forsyth played a great ball into the box, for substitute Naismith to head just over the bar. With 20 minutes remaining, Naismith latched onto a corner from Ritchie, but his header was saved. With five minutes remaining, a corner from Ritchie met the head of Christophe Berra, and his downward header beat McGovern to give Scotland a deserving victory. It was a game Scotland dominated and a non attack minded Irish team could not achieve a single shot on target.
