Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, FIFA agreed to postpone Ukraine's playoff with Scotland. At the same time, Poland who were drawn against Russia refused to play them, before FIFA kicked Russia out of the tournament. This left both Scotland and Poland with an empty fixture slot, and they arranged a friendly at Hampden.

In the first half, both sides had chances. Round about the 20 minute mark, McGregor shot over and at th other end Salamon headed wide. About ten minutes later, Christie shot just over from outside the box. Just before half time, Patterson had a shot saved, and the rebound shot by Gilmour was also saved, before Poland cleared the danger. In the second half, Piatek shot wide and he also had a shot cleared off the line by Tierney. Midway through the second half, Scotland took the lead. A free kick was whipped into the box by McGinn, and Kieran Tierney was on hand to direct a low header past the keeper. In the 93rd minute, Piatek took a dive in the box, and the referee awarded a penalty. Piatek stepped up and slotted home the penalty to give Poland an undeserved draw.
