Going into the Nations League playoff against Greece, Scotland were missing Ben Doak through injury which was a blow. Greece had an impressive Nations league campaign, which included victory against England at Wembley.
Scotland made a positive start to the match, and on the half hour mark were awarded a penalty after McTominay went down in the box following a collision with Lazaros Rota. Replays showed that it was a weak decision, but it stood. Up stepped McTominay, and he sent the keeper the wrong way to give Scotland a 1-0 lead. A few minutes before half-time, Che Adams could have doubled the lead after a Greek defensive mistake, but he hit an early shot that the keeper saved. A couple of minutes later, Adams had another chance with him hitting a low hard shot that went just past the post. At the start of the second half, Greece had the ball in the back of the net, but the ball had already gone out of play and the linesman had his flag up. Midway through the second half, the post saved Scotland as Karetsas crossed to the back post for Tzolis volley to hit the post, while Souttar put him off. With seven minutes remaining, Greece were awarded a penalty when Hanley fouled Fountas, but VAR overturned it as replays showed the foul was outside the box. Scotland held on from there to take a great lead into the second leg at Hampden.
