Scotland then travelled to Dublin to play an Ireland team that were under pressure following poor results. Ireland started the more aggressive team, and almost took the lead after three minutes when Gordon had to parry a cross in by Browne. After 12 minutes McGinn had a shot from the edge of the box, but a weak shot was easily saved. With 20 minutes on the clock, Ireland took the lead. A corner from McClean was headed back in by Duffy, to be bundled over the line by Browne. Just over five minutes later, McGinn then had a shot go just wide of the post. Ireland then went up the pitch and made it 2-0. A ball into the box by Obafemi was headed past Gordon by Troy Parrott. Ten minutes before half time, Gordon had to make a save from a Duffy header. Five minutes into the second half Obafemi put the match beyond Scotland when he collected the ball outside the box and on the turn he hit a powerful shot that went over Gordon to make it 3-0 to Ireland. Five minutes later, Hogan almost made it four, when his header was cleared off the line by Hanley. The match ended 3-0, in what was probably Scotland's worst performance under Steve Clarke, and some people were calling for his head.
