Scotland went into the next match knowing it was a must win to have any chance of winning the group. Steve Clarke took charge for his record equalling 71st match, matching Craig Brown's record.
Right from the start, Greece dominated the game, and should have gone ahead after only 8 minutes, Bakasetas played a low ball across the goal where Pavlidis just had to tap it into an empty net, but he missed the ball altogether. Greece continued to dominate the first half, but Scotland made it to half time goalless. At the start of the second half Greece passed there way through the Scotland defence, but Masouras couldn't find the target. There was then a controversal move by Steve Clarke when he took off Gannon-Doak and replaced him with Gilmour. Just after the hour mark Greece finally took the lead, when slack defending let Tsimikas slot a loose ball past Gunn. That triggered something in Scotland, as they went up the other end and equalised two minutes later. A corner from Christie fell to Ralston who put a ball into the box, and after a few headers it fell to Christie who slotted it into the corner. There was then a long VAR check for offside, but the goal was given. Scotland upped their performance, but Greece still looked dangerous. With ten minutes remaining, Robertson floated a free-kick into the box and it fell to Lewis Ferguson to sweep it into the back of the net and give Scotland an unexpected lead. Just into stoppage time at the end, Gunn pulled off a superb save from Karetsas, tipping his goalbound shot over the bar. Scotland then played a free-kick into the Greek half to see out time. Dykes chased it down and a calamitous mistake from the keeper Tzolakis, who tried to stop the ball going out for a corner, led him to spill the ball and Dykes who had continued his run, collected the spilled ball before sweeping it high into an empty net to make it 3-1. It was a smash and grab job by Scotland, that looked extremely unlikely 30 minutes earlier. At the end of the day, the match will be remembered for the result and not the performance, and it put Scotland in a very good position to make at least the playoffs.
