In the build up to Scotland's opening World Cup Qualifier away to Denmark the promising news was the return of Aaron Hickey after two years out. Something else that was talked about was that Ben Doak was now going by the name Ben Gannon-Doak. Steven Naismith had also taken over from John Carver as Steve Clarke's assistant.
Scotland went to Copenhagen not wanting a repeat of their last visit, when they went 2-0 down after only 15 minutes. After only eight minutes, Hjulmand was unmarked in the box and got on the end of a free-kick. Gunn saved his directed shot, but the flag went up for offside anyway. At the other end, Robertson floated a cross in but Dykes header went over the bar. Denmark then started to dominate possession, but were not creating many clear chances. Seven minutes before half-time, McGinn put a cross into the box, but an unmarked Christie headed wide. Five minutes into the second half, McTominay made a mazy run into the box before hitting a low shot towards the far corner, but the shot was blocked by the outstretched foot of Schmeichel. A few minutes later Denmark were close to taking the lead, but a goalbound shot by Højbjerg was deflected wide by Hanley. Just before the hour mark, Scotland had a great chance when McGinn played the ball through to Adams, he played the ball across to Dykes who was open, but he took a touch and his shot was blocked, when he should have shot first time. Five minutes later Dreyer came close, but his shot hit the side netting. With 20 minutes remaining, there was a controversial moment when sub Max Johnston was judged to have handled the ball, which prevented a clear goalscoring chance. The referee booked him, before he was called over to VAR. No further action was taken as Johnston was judged to have been nudged by the attacker. With five minutes remaining, substitute Gannon-Doak collected a long pass from Ferguson, before making a run into the box and seeing his shot deflected wide. With two minutes remaining Gunn made a double save infront of goal from Højlund and then Grønbæk, but Højlund was offside. Although Denmark were quite dominant, they failed to really threaten Scotland, and Scotland came away with a valuable point in a goaless draw away to the top seeds.
