| George Burley was a surprise appointment in January 2008, and controversy followed when he appointed Terry Butcher as his assistant. Poor results followed in Scotland's World Cup campaign, as Burley made some unpopular team selections. After humiliating defeats in Norway and Wales and failure to qualify for the World Cup Finals, he was sacked. |
