Aberdeen manager Ally MacLeod, was appointed in 1977 and the fans immediately took to him after he defeated England at Wembley. After World Cup qualification, he built up the hype of Scotland winning the World Cup, which was to lead to his downfall. After a poor World Cup and a losing start to Euro '80, he resigned.
